You don't need to break the bank to find the perfect Kegbot tablet. We'll give you some requirements and suggestions.

Nexus 7

Both the first generation and the newer 2013 versions are compatible.
  • USB Host Mode is supported out of the box
  • Well-supported, low-cost and durable
  • One of the very few tablets with NFC, which means you can use our NFC tags for drinker authorization
  • Like many tablets with a micro-USB port and no dedicated power supply, charging the tablet while the Kegboard is plugged in requires rooting the kernel. Please note that these procedures will void your tablet's warranty.

Acer Iconia A210

  • 10.1 display"!
  • Features a dedicated power supply for charging while the Kegboard is plugged in
  • Features a full-size USB port so you don't have to worry about OTG connectors
  • USB Host Mode is supported out of the box
  • It's discontinued and rather old, and therefore may be difficult to find

You can use any Android tablet that meets Kegbot requirements. They are:

Q & A

I just want to get started now, what should I buy?

The best all-around tablet for Kegbot is the Nexus 7, though be sure to note the potential caveats listed above.

What should I look for in a tablet?

Because there are so many different Android tablets on the market right now, it's difficult for us to keep an up-to-date list of compatible devices. Instead, follow these guidelines.

  • Google-developed devices command a premium, but are the safest bet. Since Google makes Android, their devices tend to showcase the platform — and are the least likely to have bugs. Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 are great choices. That said..
  • You can get a lot of mileage out of used and refurbished devices. This is going on your kegerator, not your bedstand (unless you're really lucky!); it doesn't matter if the battery life isn't great.
  • No-name "China" tablets are a mixed bag — but you could get lucky. We have had two DOAs and zero successes with sub-$80 tablets, but the times are changing, slowly.
  • A front-facing camera is recommended. Lots of people love the "party photographer" automatic photo-taking feature of Kegbot, and you'll need a front-facing camera to use it.
  • Get a 7" screen or larger. The Kegbot interface is designed to be shown off — so don't mess with anything smaller than 7"!

What versions of Android are supported?

Kegbot supports Android version 3.1 (Honeycomb) and newer. We may eventually drop support for Android 3.x, therefore we recommended Android 4.0+ if at all possible.
